DREAM CHARLOTTE: A Video Tribute from Charlotte’s Living Generations

DREAM CHARLOTTE began as a special video to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the MLK Holiday Prayer Breakfast, an event established by the H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But DREAM CHARLOTTE became so much more. It became a symbol of Charlotte’s commitment to keeping Dr. King’s dream alive. A commitment shared by generations of Charlotteans — those who led and participated in civil rights efforts in our city’s history, those who continue to shape our community today, and the young people responsible for carrying Dr. King’s legacy forward. DREAM CHARLOTTE is their voices reciting a significant section of his famous “I have a dream” speech. Fifty years later, the hope of DREAM CHARLOTTE is to generate new energy for a powerful vision that still rings true.

DREAM CHARLOTTE is a production of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. Video production was made possible by a grant from the Foundation for the Carolinas. The Knight Foundation also provided a grant for an accompanying booklet.
